Why a Custom Exercise Plan Beats a Generic One

Online videos are free and easy, but a programme built for your body, problem and goals is more likely to work. Here's why.

There are thousands of free exercise videos online. "Five exercises for back pain." "Fix your knee pain in ten minutes." Some of them are good. So why see a physiotherapist for an exercise plan?

Because the right exercise for one person can be the wrong exercise for another.

Same symptom, different causes

Two people with knee pain might have completely different problems:

  • One has arthritis and weak thigh muscles
  • One has kneecap pain from a sudden increase in running
  • One has a meniscus tear that is irritated by deep squatting

Generic videos can't tell the difference. A physiotherapist can.

What makes a plan "custom"

1. Based on an assessment Your strength, flexibility, balance and movement are tested to find what's limiting you.

2. Matched to your stage The right exercise in week one is different from the right exercise in week eight. Early exercises might focus on calming pain; later ones on strength and function.

3. Dosed correctly How many repetitions, how heavy, how often and how much discomfort is acceptable. Too little does nothing; too much causes flare-ups.

4. Built around your goals Getting back to cricket is different from walking to the temple without pain or picking up your grandchild.

5. Fits your life A plan you'll actually do. Short programmes that fit your schedule and the equipment you have at home.

Progress over time

The body adapts. An exercise that challenges you this week may be too easy in three weeks. A good programme is updated regularly so you keep improving.

Technique matters

Doing an exercise with poor form can mean it doesn't target the right muscles, or it irritates a sensitive area. Physiotherapists check and correct your technique.

Where generic exercise fits

Once you've recovered, general fitness, gym or sports programmes are great for staying healthy. The difference is that rehabilitation needs to be specific to the problem.

The bottom line

The best exercise programme is one designed for you, progressed over time, and done consistently.
